Senior Data Engineer

About Viamo

Mobile technology is revolutionizing how organizations engage with their end users. More than 96% of the world’s population has access to a mobile phone, meaning it is now possible to reach nearly every single person on the planet. Yet 3 billion people living in emerging markets still lack access to relevant, timely, and engaging information in their local languages, and their voices remain underheard. The organizations that serve them lack the technology and capacity to reach them, and many are unaware of the power of mobile technology to meet their organizational goals.

Viamo connects individuals and organisations using digital technology to make better decisions.

With more than 30 million people reached in 2020 alone, we are well on our way to meeting our goal of reaching 50 million people annually by 2023.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced data engineer to join our globally distributed Tech Team and become the crucial link between our digital products and the monitoring and measurement objectives that demonstrate that we are delivering impact. In this role you would also find ways to better serve our platform users based on the data they have entrusted us with.

You will lead on the design and implementation of our data architecture, storage, and querying in our Google BigQuery-based data warehouse (along with other terabyte-scale data structures).

You will build and maintain the products and processes that consume, use, and process data to provide insights to internal and external customers.

You will guide product teams to plan data structures, processing, metrics definition, visualization, and data governance as they innovate new products.

You will be able to work confidently and independently with our global teams as part of the Data and Insights product team. The ability to work well with remote team members is therefore an essential requirement of the role.

We are hugely ambitious for our future, and we are looking for people who are equally driven by our mission to improve lives at scale through mobile technology.

    • Work with the Director of Infrastructure and Security, and with Viamo's Data Protection Officer, to ensure that data processing complies with our robust privacy and data protection commitments.

  • Support the Data and Insights product team in planning the product roadmap:
    • There is significant scope to improve on current best practice and ample opportunity to work across departments to evolve data assets.
    • Recommend ways of increasing efficiency of internal processes through automation and increased access to data
    • Recommend any further resourcing or technology gaps Viamo has in terms of realising its ambitions
    • Recommend new technical methods of data analysis based on their specific database management expertise
